2021 - Recycle A Device
WINNER: SUSTAINABILITY THROUGH TECHNOLOGY 2021
Recycle A Device, or RAD, tracks down unwanted laptops and puts them to good use, teaching high school students in-demand tech engineering skills to refurbish them, and then works with community groups to get the refurbished laptops into the hands of the ākonga (students) and rangatahi (young people) who need them.
RAD aims to bridge the digital divide by giving hardware and skills access to students. By March 2022, they plan to provide at least 2000 laptops to those who need them, and operate refurbishment programmes at 15 schools nationwide.
