2022 - Auckland Council
WINNER: SUSTAINABILITY THROUGH TECHNOLOGY 2022
The ICT Innovation team at Auckland Council is a small team supporting the Auckland region. Their mission is to develop innovative solutions that provide real sustainability outcomes in the Auckland region. The team has a range of solutions already live in place including monitoring stream pollution levels, helping reduce Kauri die-back, and predator trap activation notifications. With little budget available, the team takes a design thinking approach. Its many successes, and focus on education on what the tech can do, has lead to a strong pipeline of requests from the community.
Computer Recycling Ltd.
FINALIST: SUSTAINABILITY THROUGH TECHNOLOGY 2022
An electronic waste recycling and disposal center in the heart of Auckland, Computer Recycling Ltd. specialises in the reuse and recycling of “anything with a plug”, including IT equipment. In 2020, the company implemented the BLUBOX shredder and an MSS optical sorter, to New Zealand shores. The BLUBOX processes previously un-recyclable e-waste, diverting millions of tons away from the landfills. Computer Recycling is now on a mission to promote awareness and help customers with the recycling and recovery of IT equipment related to e-waste.
Christchurch City Council
Christchurch City Council’s Climate Resilience Strategy 2021 includes a target of net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. The council built an automated emissions tracker, overcoming the challenges of disparate data sources, that displays monthly information on emission amounts and sources. Citizens and organisations can view the tracker online and the tracker blueprint can be adopted by other councils, as New Zealand marches towards its 2050 emissions reductions targets.
